Elizabeth Holmes , the disgraced founder of blood testing startup Theranos, will reportedly be transferred from a minimum security prison to a halfway home next August. In 2022, Holmes, 42, was sentenced to more than 11 years in prison for defrauding Theranos investors out of hundreds of millions of dollars and ordered to pay restitution. The company falsely promoted its technology as being capable of detecting diseases, including types of cancer, from drops of finger-pricked blood.
The Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) informed Holmes’s victims of the upcoming move to the Austin transitional center in Del Valle, Texas, according to ABC News . The New York Times and NBC News confirmed ABC’s reporting. While Holmes has been incarcerated at the federal prison center in Bryan, Texas, her prison term has been reduced several times.
The US district judge Edward Davila wrote in court filings that her shortened sentence did not diminish the weight of her fraudulent behavior. “Holmes’s revised sentence continues to reflect a just punishment for her serious offense and serves as a reminder that the scales of justice will balance,” Davila said, according to ABC News. She is set to leave prison in February 2030, BOP records show.
ABC News reported that Holmes plans to reside in Austin after her release. Holmes has faced renewed interest as the subject of comedian Nathan Fielder’s upcoming documentary You Can See Everything. The enigmatic project follows Holmes and her partner Billy Evans before her prison term and through the start of her incarceration.
In May, NPR reported that Evans had raised millions for a new medical testing startup, a revelation that fueled speculation over Holmes’s post-prison plans.
